Texas Title Bonds: What You Need to Know
Bought a vehicle without a valid title or can't prove ownership? The Texas bonded title process lets you establish ownership with a Certificate of Title Surety Bond. Once TxDMV gives you your bond amount, Lavon Insurance can issue your bond, usually the same day, starting at $100.

What Is a Texas Bonded Title?
A bonded title is a Texas certificate of title issued through a special process when normal proof of ownership is unavailable or insufficient. It's backed by a surety bond that protects any prior owner, lienholder or future buyer who later proves a valid claim to the vehicle.
Under Texas Transportation Code §501.053, the bond expires three years after its effective date. If no claim is made during that time, you can generally apply at your county tax office for a regular title without the "bonded" notation.
- You bought a vehicle but never received a valid title
- The seller can't or won't provide the title documents
- The title was assigned incorrectly
- You have a bill of sale or other evidence of ownership, but not enough for a normal transfer
Who Can Apply for a Texas Bonded Title?
You must be a Texas resident or military personnel stationed in Texas, and the vehicle must meet TxDMV's requirements.
In Your Possession
The vehicle must be in your possession and under your control.
A Complete Vehicle
It doesn't have to run, but it must have a frame, body and motor (frame and motor for a motorcycle).
Eligible for a Title
Junked, nonrepairable or otherwise title-ineligible vehicles don't qualify.
TxDMV reviews your vehicle and documents and decides whether the bonded title procedure is available. Buying a bond on its own doesn't guarantee a title, so always get your TxDMV notice first.
How to Get a Bonded Title in Texas
The most important rule: go through TxDMV before you buy the bond.
Apply With TxDMV
Submit the Bonded Title Application (Form VTR-130-SOF) to a TxDMV Regional Service Center with your photo ID, ownership evidence and the $15 fee.
Receive Your Notice
If you qualify, TxDMV sends a Notice of Determination showing the vehicle value and the exact bond amount you need.
Purchase the Bond
Send your notice to Lavon Insurance. We issue the Certificate of Title Surety Bond for the exact amount shown.
Apply at Your County Tax Office
Within 30 days, submit the original bond, your notice and Form 130-U to your county tax assessor-collector.
Receive Your Bonded Title
Your title is issued with a "bonded" notation. After three years with no claims, you can apply for a regular title.
How Much Does a Texas Title Bond Cost?
There are two numbers to know. The bond amount is 1.5 times the vehicle value TxDMV sets. The premium is what you actually pay: a small percentage of the bond amount, paid once for the full three-year term.
| TxDMV Vehicle Value | Required Bond Amount | Estimated Premium* |
|---|---|---|
| Up to $6,667 | Up to $10,000 | $100 |
| $10,000 | $15,000 | $135 |
| $13,333 | $20,000 | $180 |
| $16,666 | $25,000 | $225 |
| $20,000 | $30,000 | $270 |
| $33,333 | $50,000 | $450 |
Other Costs in the Bonded Title Process
| Item | Typical Cost | Paid To |
|---|---|---|
| Bonded title application (VTR-130-SOF) | $15 | TxDMV |
| Title bond premium | From $100 | Bond provider |
| Title application fee | About $28–$33, varies by county | County tax office |
| VIN inspection, if required | Varies | Law enforcement / auto theft unit |
| Appraisal, if required | Varies by appraiser | Licensed dealer or adjuster |
| Registration, sales tax, inspection | Standard state and county fees | County tax office |
How Does TxDMV Determine Vehicle Value?
TxDMV sets the value, so you don't need to calculate it yourself. It uses the Standard Presumptive Value (SPV) first, then the NADA value. If neither is available, common for older, classic, custom or heavily modified vehicles, you'll need an appraisal from a licensed Texas dealer or insurance adjuster on Form VTR-125, dated and submitted within 30 days.
- Vehicles 25 years or older that appraise under $4,000 are valued at $4,000
- Trailers under 20 feet use a flat $4,000 value
- Trailers 20 feet or longer use a flat $7,000 value
What Documents Are Required?
Initial TxDMV Review
- Form VTR-130-SOF
- Government-issued photo ID
- Evidence of ownership, such as a bill of sale
- $15 processing fee
- VIN inspection (VTR-68-A) or appraisal (VTR-125), if required
Final Title Application
- Original title surety bond
- Notice of Determination
- Application for Texas Title and/or Registration (Form 130-U)
- Lien releases, if applicable
- Proof of insurance and inspection, if registering
If TxDMV records show a lien 10 years old or less, you must provide an original release of lien or letter of no interest from each lienholder. Without it, you aren't eligible for a bonded title.
Vehicles with no Texas title or registration record need a Law Enforcement Identification Number Inspection (Form VTR-68-A) from an auto theft investigator.
Bonded Title vs. Replacement Title
| Situation | What You Need |
|---|---|
| Vehicle is already titled in your name and you lost the title | A certified copy (replacement) title. No bond is needed. |
| You can't provide enough ownership documents for a normal transfer | A bonded title, if TxDMV approves the procedure. |
1 Year to Buy the Bond
You have one year from the date of the Notice of Determination to buy the bond. After that, you'll need a new notice.
30 Days to File
Take your bonded title documents to the county tax office within 30 days after buying the bond.

How much is a Texas bonded title bond?
The bond amount is 1.5 times the vehicle value TxDMV sets. What you pay is the premium, which starts at $100 for most vehicles and is typically about 1.5% of the bond amount for larger bonds. It's paid once for the full 3-year term.
How long does a Texas bonded title last?
The bond expires three years after its effective date. If no valid claim is made during that time, you can generally apply at your county tax office for a regular title without the bonded notation.
Can I buy the bond before going to TxDMV?
No. Get your TxDMV Notice of Determination first. It confirms the bonded title process is available and shows the exact bond amount required.
How long does it take to get a bonded title in Texas?
TxDMV review usually takes a few weeks. Once you have your Notice of Determination, the bond can often be issued the same day. The county tax office then processes your title application.
Does TxDMV sell the bond?
No. TxDMV determines eligibility and the bond amount. You buy the surety bond from a licensed insurance agency or surety bond provider such as Lavon Insurance.
Can I get a title bond with bad credit?
Most standard title bonds are issued without a credit-based surcharge. Larger bond amounts may require underwriting review.
Is a bonded title the same as a lost title replacement?
No. If the vehicle is already titled in your name and you lost the title, a replacement (certified copy) title is usually the right solution. A bonded title is for when you can't provide sufficient ownership documents.
Can a vehicle with an existing lien get a bonded title?
Only with a release. If TxDMV records show a lien 10 years old or less, you must provide an original release of lien or letter of no interest from each lienholder to be eligible.
Does the vehicle have to run?
No. It must be a complete vehicle with a frame, body and motor and otherwise eligible for a Texas title, but it doesn't have to be operational.
Can I get a bonded title for a trailer or motorcycle?
Yes. The same process applies to trailers, motorcycles and other titled vehicles. Trailers use a flat value of $4,000 under 20 feet or $7,000 at 20 feet or longer.
How long do I have to buy the bond and file?
You have one year from the date of the Notice of Determination to buy the bond, and 30 days after buying it to submit your documents to the county tax office.
What does the bonded title bond protect?
It protects previous owners, lienholders and future buyers if someone later proves a valid ownership claim to the vehicle during the 3-year bond period.
What if TxDMV says I don't qualify?
You may have other options, such as a tax assessor-collector hearing or title litigation. TxDMV can tell you which procedures apply to your situation.
Have Your TxDMV Bond Amount?
Once TxDMV issues your Notice of Determination, we can get your title bond issued fast, starting at $100.
Bond approval and premium are subject to surety underwriting. Bonded title eligibility, vehicle value and required bond amount are determined by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles.
